Phonology

This course offers an introduction to the various domains of phonological investigation and presents selected topics of phonological analysis. It introduces the basic concepts of segmental phonology (phoneme, allophone, neutralisation, distinctive features, phonological rules and processes), phonotactics (in particular syllable structure), and prosody (quantity, stress tone, intonation). Phonological phenomena of a variety of languages are illustrated. The course mostly focuses on language structures, providing at the same time a historical overview of phonological theories.
